Excellence

The American Heritage dictionary defines “excellence” as a state, quality, or condition of excelling; superiority. I agree with this definition, I feel that to be excellent at something you have to be the best you can be. In today’s society people will do anything to achieve excellence an example can be found in Nancy Gibbs’, “Reading Between the Lies: “A young reporter who stole and made up stories forces the New York Times to take stock,”. In the story, the reporter does this to get ahead and feel valued, and that is where I feel the line to achieving excellence is crossed.

I feel what causes something to have value is when we have a memory of a time when we excelled at that event and that thing reminds of this. An example is when I shot a 19 pound Canadian goose the first time I went hunting. After shooting the goose I got it mounted. Now every time I look at that goose it reminds me of a time I excelled at hunting and that is why I value that goose.

I feel that people can achieve excellence as long as they work hard and have bit of luck. I feel that people achieve excellence by practicing and never giving up. For example Derrick Jitter wanted to play for the New York Yankees since he was little. Since he had this dream he never gave up and practiced hard, and when he got older he played for the Yankees, therefore achieving excellence.

I think that people do feel a lot of pressure to achieve excellence and as a result they cheat. I think that people cheat because they want to achieve excellence but they do not want to work hard. Also people cheat because, our society demands excellence and we do not want to stick out so they cheat.

Overall, I feel that people can achieve excellence and they do not have to cheat to reach it. For example, I shot the Canadian goose and I did not cheat and now I value that a lot more then if I would have cheated. Also I feel that everyone achieves excellence at something and that is why we do not need to cheat to achieve excellence at other things.

EDUCATRION

What education means to me is that you learn something new, not just in school, but in the world around you. In the essay The Hidden Teacher it says “We think we learn from teachers, and we sometimes do. But the teachers are not always to be found in school or in great laboratories…Moreover, our teachers may be hidden, even the greatest teacher….” I fell that some of the best learning happens from experiences in our life, not from classrooms in a school.

An example of learning outside a classroom can be found in the essay, How I Discovered Words. In the essay, it talks about how Malcolm X learned all kinds of new words while he was in jail. It talks about how he used to copy words from a dictionary to a sheet of paper, and then he would learn all new words. Over time, after doing this, he got better penmanship and learned lots of new words. This is just one example of how people learn outside a classroom.

Another example of people learning outside a classroom can be found in the movie, Dead Poet Society. In the movie, a group of guys go out to an old Indian cave, and read different poetry. In one scene of the movie they are in the cave and they are reading poetry from Whitman. Also in the movie, one kid learns to find confidence in himself, and in the last scene he stands up on his desk in respect of the teacher who was let go. Also movies are a way to learn. For example, we learned watching this movie that people need to have control over their lives, and that other people can not make all the major choices in their life.

Also another way that people can learn from outside a classroom is from experiences in life. For example, people can learn through trial and error. One example of this can be found in when you are learning how to ride a bike for the first time. Another way to learn through life’s experiences is by dealing with the same experience more than once and learning from that experience by finding out what you did wrong. I feel that learning through life’s experiences is the best way to learn because, it is the easiest way to learn new things as long as we are open to them.

Another way of learning through life’s experiences is by just simply living; everyday you learn something new whether you know it or not. Everyday you get smarter and brighter by just simply living. I feel that everyone has their own ways of learning such as copy words down from a book or reading poetry in a cave at night no way of learning is wrong, that is what makes education so great. Overall, I feel that learning just comes to you and you do not just have to sit in a classroom to learn something new about the world that we live in.

personal statement

I feel that I am a very impressive individual; because of all that I have accomplished in my life. In the past seventeen years I have become an Eagle Scout held three jobs, and saved a man’s life. Also at the age of seventeen I know hundreds of different plant names. Which I feel is an important thing, because I am looking for a job in horticulture.

The field of horticulture interests me, because you get to do something different everyday. Also everyday on the job you learn something new. I feel that my past work experience will help me in this field of work. For example I worked at a green house for a summer, and also I helped people plant and design there gardens.

My career goal is to become a landscape architect. I feel that I have the skills to meet this goal. For example I have very good communication’s skills, I am not afraid to talk to people, and I am good at explaining stuff. Another skill I have is leadership I feel that I make a good leader.

Personal characteristics that I have are compassion. For example I never yell at people for doing the wrong thing. Also I am trustworthy I feel that I always tell the truth, because you always get caught if you lie.

I feel that I should be chosen over other applicants, because I have overcome many difficulties in my life. For example, when I got my Eagle Scout I had to do a large service project. Also I feel that I would be good at this job because I have past work experience. Overall, I feel that I make a great candidate for this job because I have all the necessary skills to get the job done well.
